Simple ways to remember, pray, and honor those we love

Some memories stay with us in the smallest ways. A favorite song. A family recipe. A story that still makes us laugh. When someone we love dies, these everyday reminders can bring both comfort and sadness.

On November 2, All Souls’ Day, we come together as Catholics to remember and pray for those who have passed. It is a time to pause, bring our loved ones into prayer, and find comfort in the promise of eternal life.

Preparing for this day does not have to be complicated. Here are a few meaningful ways to observe it.

Make time for prayer

You might say a decade of the Rosary, offer a quiet prayer before bed, or remember a loved one by name during your daily prayers. If you are unsure where to begin, the familiar words of the Eternal Rest prayer offer a simple starting point:

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.”

Visit their resting place

A cemetery visit can give you time to step away from a busy day and reflect. You may wish to bring flowers, gently tend to a memorial, or simply sit for a few moments in prayer.

There is no need to plan what you will say or how you should feel. Some visits bring tears. Others bring a sense of peace or a happy memory. Give yourself room for whatever comes.

Share a memory

Remembering together can be especially comforting. Look through photographs, make a favorite meal, or tell your children and grandchildren about someone who helped shape your family.

These conversations do not have to be formal. Sometimes the best stories begin with, “Do you remember when…?”

Offer a small act of kindness

St. Thérèse of Lisieux reminds us of the value of doing small things with love. In that spirit, consider honoring someone’s memory through a simple kindness. Call someone who is lonely, bring a meal to a neighbor, or reach out to a friend who is grieving.

A small gesture can mean a great deal, especially to someone who may be missing a loved one quietly.

Join us for Mass

We invite you and your family to our All Souls’ Day Mass, celebrated by The Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne, on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the All Saints Cemetery Mausoleum, 700 Middletown Avenue, North Haven.

Whether your loss is recent or many years have passed, you are welcome to join us as we pray for our departed loved ones and support one another in faith.

As All Souls’ Day approaches, choose a way to remember that feels meaningful to you. A prayer, a visit, a shared story. Each gives us a moment to honor the people we love and entrust them to God’s care.
