Within the Catholic Tradition

Cremation

Cremation has become an increasingly common choice for families. The Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is chosen for the right reasons and carried out in a way that reflects our faith in the dignity of the human body and the hope of the Resurrection.

When cremation is selected, the Church continues to call us to honor our loved ones with prayer, reverence, and proper burial.

Catholic Funeral Rites

Whether burial or cremation is chosen, the Church encourages families to celebrate the three sacred moments of the Order of Christian Funerals:

  • The Vigil (Wake Service)
  • The Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial)
  • The Rite of Committal

Whenever possible, it is preferred that the Funeral Mass take place with the body present prior to cremation.

However, cremated remains may also be present for the Funeral Liturgy when necessary.

These rites allow family and friends to gather in faith, commend the deceased to God, and proclaim our belief in Christ’s victory over death.

Reverence for Cremated Remains

The Church teaches that cremated remains must be treated with the same dignity and respect as the body. They represent a person who was created in God’s image and destined for eternal life. This means cremated remains should:

  • Be handled with care and reverence
  • Be placed in a worthy vessel (urn)
  • Be buried or entombed in a sacred place

A Sacred Place of Rest

Cremated remains should be buried in consecrated ground or placed in a columbarium or mausoleum. This provides:

  • A permanent and dignified resting place
  • A sacred space for prayer and remembrance
  • A visible witness to our faith in the Resurrection

The Church does not permit scattering cremated remains, dividing them among family members, or keeping them indefinitely at home. While keeping an urn at home may feel comforting, it does not reflect the Church’s understanding of Christian burial and can unintentionally delay the healing process of grief.

Our Sacred Commitment to You

Catholic cemeteries, mausoleums, and columbaria offer sacred places where loved ones are entrusted to care with dignity, reverence, and respect. These consecrated grounds provide a space for prayer, remembrance, and quiet reflection, rooted in the hope of the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life.
