Maintaining the beauty of a cemetery is a duty that cemetery staff hold dear. Cemeteries should be a place for gathering, where loved ones can come together in a peaceful setting. They are also a place for remembrance, where memories echo through the tranquil grounds.

Preserving that peace and beauty takes the work of dedicated people, but there is often a question of who takes care of what parts of a cemetery. In this article, we’ll share the steps that cemetery staff are proud to take to care for your loved one’s final resting place and how family members and friends can help maintain the sanctity of these important locations.

Who Takes Care of a Cemetery?

Our cemetery staff is responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep of communal areas, which includes clearing out debris, cutting the grass, maintaining pathways, and keeping the facilities clean for visitors.

How Can I Help Care for My Loved One’s Memorial Site?

Before taking any action, be sure you familiarize yourself with the cemetery’s rules regarding a memorial site’s care. In many cases, a cemetery will have regulations around what can be placed on a gravesite. These Rules and Regulations can be found on our website www.ccacem.org

If something that is not permitted is placed on the gravesite, the cemetery will take action to remove it, which can sometimes be disappointing to families. Any item you do place should be secured to the monument and not damaging to either the memorial or the grounds around it.

You may also find that, over time, you want to clean the memorial site. Depending on the cemetery’s guidelines, you may be able to clean a monument or marker with a gentle cleanser and a soft-bristled brush. However, you should speak with the cemetery staff before starting to clean to ensure you’re following proper guidelines.

While the cemetery is generally only responsible for the care of the cemetery as a whole and not individual gravesites, that doesn’t mean that they can’t help when you do encounter an issue with a particular gravesite. If you have a concern, such as if your loved one has a broken headstone, contact the cemetery manager and they can assist you or provide you with steps you can take to remedy the situation. If you have a concern about the cemetery grounds overall, such as if you notice vandalism, be sure to report it to the cemetery staff immediately.
