From Funeral Mass to Committal

Traditional Catholic Burials
The sanctity of life and the promise of the resurrection are at the heart of Catholic funeral rites. From the Mass to the interment in consecrated ground, these practices provide comfort to mourners and support their faith.
Mass
A traditional Catholic funeral often begins with a Funeral Mass, which takes place in the church and includes prayers, readings from Scripture, and the Eucharist. This Mass is a sacred ceremony to commit your loved one to the earth through burial or to a final resting place such as a mausoleum. After the Mass, if mourners are not already at the gravesite, they will accompany the departed to the cemetery in a funeral procession.
Committal
At the grave, the priest or deacon will say a prayer and read from the Scriptures, ending with the Lord’s Prayer and a blessing. The coffin may then be lowered into the grave, signifying the return of the deceased to the earth. This act is another symbol of the deceased’s natural return to the earth as well as a gesture of respect and a final goodbye.
A Catholic Mass and burial offer a solemn and respectful way to affirm the passing of the deceased and to honor their memory. Funeral rites also reaffirm not only the Catholic faith but also the promise of eternal life.
Cremation
Many people have questions about cremation in traditional Catholic funeral rites. In 1963, the Catholic Church formally permitted cremation, provided it is practiced in accordance with the Church’s teachings and guidelines. Cremated remains must be placed in a sacred location, such as a Catholic cemetery. As with a traditional burial, this allows mourners to gather and remember the deceased. A person who chooses cremation may still have a Catholic funeral in most cases, with an additional Rite for the Burial of Ashes following the Funeral Mass.
